How To Salvage What You Can After A Flood

Posted on

When your home has become damaged by a flood, you'll need to remove any salvageable materials and anything that is vulnerable to floodwater. This way, you can minimize the losses you may experience as a result of floodwater. Many valuables can rapidly be destroyed when exposed to water damage. You may lose irreplaceable family photographs and documents. But if you act quickly, you'll be able to salvage more.

Beware of Mold

One issue is the formation of mold. It takes less than 48 hours for mold to form on an object that has been exposed to water. In some cases, you may be able to remove the mold, but objects that have porous surfaces cannot be salvaged when they have mold in them.

Don't Try to Save Everything

During a flood, you might not be able to save everything. Therefore, you'll need to prioritize. Focus on items that are worth a lot and items that can't easily be replaced. Keep in mind that your home insurance provider will reimburse you for items lost in a flood.

Air Dry Everything

Air dry your belongings as soon as possible. This reduces the risk that mold will form and will also stop any damage caused by contact with water. In a humid environment, you may need to use fans or your belongings won't dry. Also, make sure to open windows both to lower humidity and the smell of floodwater.

Handle Certain Objects with Care

Objects are typically more fragile when wet, so handle them carefully. This is especially true for papers, prints and photos. When wet, these objects are prone to tearing. Try to soak up as much water as possible before handling these materials.

Clean Everything Thoroughly

Clean dirt and debris of of anything you attempt to salvage. Even if it's no longer moist, it may be ruined if dirt and stains aren't removed promptly before they can set in. Clean very gently and make sure to use cleaning chemicals rated as safe for use with the items you're cleaning.
